Destination Cambodia
Rattanakiri
With only 150.000 inhabitants Rattanakiri is one of the smaller provinces in Cambodia, located in the northeast of the country bordering Laos and Vietnam. Almost endless primeval forests, hills, everglades, and water streams make Rattanakiri one of the least developed and yet explored regions of Cambodia. Tigers, leopards, red deer, elephants, and crocodiles still live in the tangly jungle. It is even believed that the nearly died out species of the Java-Rhino might have found some undiscovered retreats.
The very traditional and shy savage mountain tribes of the Khmer Leou which divide themselves into 21 different groups settle from the capital of Banlungs into the most isolated regions of the province. The more than a 1000 year old culture of the locals is even today practically undiscovered. Besides their religion the locals do have one serious love which is smoking. Everyone from the men to the women and even to the kids from 6 years onwards is smoking their own pipes and cigarettes. The province of Rattanakiri – one of the last spots in Cambodia or even southeast Asia where traditions and culture even after a 1000 years are still alive and practiced.
Mondulkiri
Explore rich culture, experience breathtaking scenery, and encounter the wonderful people of Mondulkiri. Located in the north-east of Cambodia Mondulkiri is Cambodia’s largest province with a population of only 40,000. It is the home of several hill tribes and just like the neighboring province of Ratanakiri. Mondulkiri is not famous for its French colonial history but for the endless and unexplored jungles, thickly forested hills, rivers and huge waterfalls. The capital of the province – Senmonorom – is located between the hills of the Cholong-Plateau with an altitude of about 1000 meters; together with little pinewoods the region almost reminds oneself of the Scottish Highlands.
An excursion to the little gold digger town of Prey Meas is worth the way, featuring an ambience just like an old wildwest movie. 500 families live in this small village off any civilization. Still today the local people try to make their living with digging for gold in local mines and adits.
