Niels Steeman

Niels Steeman’s career path from his home country of the Netherlands to Thailand has involved employment with prominent DMCs and a major Bangkok hotel, ahead of his appointment as Destination Asia’s Group Product Director, with responsibility for products in 11 Asian countries.

Niels is also project director for various IT ventures including website design. With experience as a sales and marketing director with a DMC in Norway, he is also tasked with initialising sales and business development in Northern Europe.

On his decision to turn his passion for travel into a career choice, Niels said: “As I see it, visiting new places is one of the few life experiences that can be both fun and educational and at the same time it can be extremely important in leaving behind positive benefits for host communities.”

After studying travel management at the Breda University in the Netherlands, Niels gained valuable industry experience ahead of leaving Europe for opportunities in Thailand where he was appointed marketing manager for a Bangkok-based DMC.

Following employment as sales and marketing manager with a DMC based in Drammen, Norway, the lure of a return to Bangkok proved irresistible and Niels was appointed director of sales with the city centre Pathumwan Princess Hotel.

Spells as a business development director with a Bangkok-based DMC and then general manager with an E-commerce booking engine led to the doors of Destination Asia’s Bangkok head office and Niels’ appointment as Group Product Director.

On his decision to join the DA team, Niels said: “The tourism industry is a people’s industry and dealing with people is what gives me that extra edge in giving that little bit extra.

“Destination Asia is strongly focused on the human factor within travel, which made it an easy decision to join the team.”

In a non-professional capacity, for rest and relaxation, Niels likes to leap out of planes and has so far completed 320 skydives with more pencilled in on the horizon.
