Destination Laos
How to Travel in Laos?
Within Laos most tourists travel between the major centers via domestic flights – presently Laos does not have an operational rail network, and as infrastructure is less developed road travel between the major cities can be slow and tiring and is usually undertaken by more adventurous travelers. River travel on the Mekong is possible along some sections and is a very pleasant way to experience the country.
Flights
Within Laos domestic routes are serviced by Laos Airlines – the national carrier. Between the major domestic centers such as Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse the aircraft used are usually ATR72. There is a baggage limit of 20 kilograms per person, and excess baggage charges may apply. When flying by air to the more remote areas in Laos smaller planes are often used, and flights become less frequent.
Road Travel
In Laos the motor vehicles used by Destination Asia are the best available and are relatively modern, air-conditioned, with the relevant licenses. Typically sedans or late model minivans are used for transportation with fewer clients, and coaster buses or coaches for larger sized groups. Normally vehicles are filled to less than 85% of capacity to ensure than client comfort is maintained.
River Travel
Although not a fast way to travel, river travel is a very enjoyable and increasingly popular way to travel around more remote areas of Laos, and allows a true appreciation of its natural beauty and relaxed pace of life. From the Thai border at Chiang Khong near the Golden Triangle it is possible to travel down the mighty Mekong to Luang Prabang, a comfortable journey of two days (one night). In Southern Laos, river cruising from Pakse to Champassak and the famous ‘4,000 Islands’ area of the Mekong is a highly recommended way of visiting the spectacular and unique region.
