Destination Myanmar

Etiquette

Shorts, short skirts or revealing clothing are not appropriate in Myanmar, especially when visiting temples or any religious site. Myanmar is a conservative Buddhist culture and improper dress can be offensive. Please dress with respect for the local culture. Wear sensible walking shoes that can be easily removed when required. Sandals, thongs or flip-flops (available locally) are very convenient footwear.

Do not hug or kiss in public or touch anyone on the head. Accept or give things with your right hand. Always ask or signal a request when you would like to take a photograph of people (especially a close up shot) and await confirmation that it is OK. Sit lower than and do not touch or offer to shake hands with a monk.
