Destination Thailand
Krabi
Situated on the banks of the Krabi estuary, is a small town and a beautiful province, just to the south of Phuket and Phan-nga. Krabi boasts it’s own international level airport and is easily reached by road from Phuket in just a couple of hours to the North. Koh Lanta is almost two hours to the South of Krabi. It is also possible to drive to Surat Thani to the East in two to three hours.
Most visitors to Krabi stay at the beautiful beach resort of Ao Nang which is a 30 minute drive from Krabi Town. Another popular area is Railae Beach which is accessible only by boat and is home to accommodation ranging from five star to budget guesthouse. Many young people like to travel to Railae to participate in Rock-climbing as the area is fringed with vertical limestone cliffs creating a fantastic setting for climbers as they have a birds eye view of the beach from their sheer precipice.
There is easy access to some of the small islands nearby, such as Chicken Island (Koh Kai) and Koh Poda which are two of more than a hundred islands. One of the most popular activities is to visit the islands for snorkeling or kayaking as they are not far and can easily be reached by local long tailed boat. The waters around the islands are usually clear and clean and teaming with a variety of colourful tropical fish. There is also some sandy beaches on the islands which are perfect for a picnic lunch. Boats also leave Krabi for Phi Phi Islands and Koh Lanta, both slightly further afield.
Krabi Province boasts some spectacular scenery on both land and water. Limestone karsts rise vertically creating one of the most scenic destinations in Thailand. Driving along Krabi’s back roads is a true pleasure where plantations of rubber or pineapple are planted in rows and interspersed with the chaos of verdant jungle fringes. Coconut trees further add to the unbelievable tropical scene.
