A trip to Laos is like a trip back in time. The “Land of
a million elephants” offers a refreshing change from
the modernity of more developed nations and has a
diverse culture untainted by globalization. There are
no trains to rush for and the landlocked country
offers misty mountains, golden glittering Buddhist
temples and sleepy French colonial towns lost in
time.

Laos is a landlocked nation of 236,800 sq-km that is Flight of the Gibbons

divided into 16 provinces. The country is bordered S
by Myanmar to the northeast; Cambodia to the A
south; China to the north; Thailand to the west; and
Vietnam to the east. Laos is mostly mountainous,

with steep terrain and narrow river valleys being the

With an estimated population of nearly 5.7 million,

Laos is one of the most sparsely populated countries

in Asia. Natural landmarks include the Annamite
Mountains close to the border with Vietnam, as well I

as the Mekong River, which lows from China and

along the border with Thailand. The country is
teeming with wildlife including elephants, leopards, E
panthers, gibbons and black bears.
