Animal welfare means ensuring animals are treated with respect, compassion, and care, both in the wild and in human-managed environments. In the travel industry, this means designing encounters that protect animals from harm, stress, or exploitation while supporting their long-term survival.
To protect the diverse and magnificent wildlife found across Asia, we developed with the assistance of leading wildlife experts, an Animal Welfare Policy. This policy outlines the standards we require from suppliers, the practices we support, and the regulations we adhere to when wildlife is encountered in our operations.
Preserving Asia’s wildlife is essential for protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage. We only work with licensed suppliers and attractions that meet national laws and fully comply with CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
CITES regulates international trade in selected species of wild animals and plants through strict controls, and all Destination Asia destinations are Parties to the Convention. There are three levels of protection for endangered animals depending on the species’ circumstances, although the following always applies:
No trade of elephants, tigers, primates, or marine mammals (alive, dead, or in parts).
No sourcing of these animals from the wild for attractions, except for approved conservation breeding programs.
Advising travellers never to buy ivory or wildlife-derived products.
