Luang Prabang
The ancient town of Luang Prabang was the country’s capital and is still thought of as its spiritual centre. Set on a peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, it has elegant palm-lined riverbanks and countless golden stupas which create picture postcard views.
Luang Namtha
Set amid lush rainforest, this destination is ideal for nature and adventure-based eco-tourism. Bordering the Nam Ha National Protected Area, it offers access to miles of unspoilt jungle, where visitors can explore on foot and experience the region’s rich biodiversity, scenic beauty and strong sense of remoteness.
Oudomxay
A tranquil spot in northern Laos, Oudomxay is so elevated, it sometimes disappears in the clouds. Leading destinations include Chom Ong Cave, the Tadnamkat waterfall and Sacred Phachaosingkham Temple. The ancient Phouthat stupa stands in the centre of the town and is regarded as the symbol of Oudomxay.
Bokeo
This is the country’s smallest province, but one of its most ethnically diverse, with over 30 co-habiting ethnic groups. Bordering Myanmar and Thailand, Bokeo is the centre of the famous Golden Triangle, and the embarkation point for memorable two-day boat trips down the Mekong to Luang Prabang.
Vientiane
The capital of Laos on the Mekong River is one of Southeast Asia’s finest cities. Impressive government buildings blend with French colonial mansions, leafy avenues and immaculate temples. Simple pleasures such as enjoying an aromatic local coffee with fresh croissants are easily found here.
Vang Vieng
Xieng Khuang
The province of Xieng Khuang houses one of the world’s most mysterious features – the Plain of Jars. This is a collection of randomly placed stone jars, weighing up to six tons each. No one can definitively say how they got there or what they were used for. The vast plains here are ideal for nature lovers wishing to explore rural Laos.
Khammouane
Khammouane Province is home to three of Laos’ most important protected areas, encompassing limestone forests, dramatic karst landscapes and vast cave systems. Among its highlights are the Kong Lor Caves, an extraordinary 7.5-kilometre river tunnel explored by boat, with ceilings soaring to around 100 metres in places.
Champasak
The town of Champasak features French colonial buildings side by side with traditional Lao wooden houses and offers glimpses of a bygone stately era. Life here moves charmingly slow, even by local standards. This is an ideal base for experiencing riverside life and nearby attractions such as the Angkor-period Wat Phu ruins.
Attapeu
Here in Laos’ southernmost province, nine major tribes live together in harmony among forested mountains and fertile valleys. The capital, Samakkhixay, is in a large, picturesque valley. A visit to the morning market is an essential trip, where visitors can browse traditional pottery, weavings, bamboo baskets, bows and arrows, and other indigenous artefacts.
Salavan
Salavan Province is home to the vast Phou Xieng Thong National Biodiversity Conservation Area, which nurtures rare wildlife, including gibbons and clouded leopards, within dense protected forests. Visitors to this forest-clad province may be serenaded by the lively Lam Salavanh dance and traditional khaen music, which is still proudly played today.
Sekong
One of Laos’ least explored provinces, Sekong is rugged, scenic and rich in traditional character, with remote farming communities scattered across its dramatic landscapes. Untouched tropical forests, rare flora and fauna, and a strong heritage of intricate textile weaving add to the province’s distinctive appeal and sense of discovery.
