Malaysia’s Project M.A.R.S. makes nature the classroom

What was once a palm oil plantation in Balik Pulau, Penang, has become a thriving food forest and a compelling example of community-led environmental regeneration.

Project M.A.R.S. began with a small group concerned about the future of the planet and a modest garden in Minden Heights. Their efforts have since grown into a diverse agroecological space where visitors can explore the connections between food production, biodiversity and sustainable living.

At the project’s official launch on 5 October, Destination Asia Malaysia witnessed the results firsthand. Even breakfast and lunch incorporated ingredients foraged from the forest, demonstrating how the regenerated landscape can provide food while supporting a healthier ecosystem.

A community-run seed bank is another important element, preserving local and heirloom varieties while safeguarding traditional knowledge.

Destination Asia has already introduced corporate groups and Semester at Sea students to Project M.A.R.S., using the site as a living classroom.

For visiting groups, the experience offers an opportunity to engage with sustainability in practical terms, while discovering how a grassroots initiative can restore degraded land and inspire a different relationship with the natural world.
