Tropical Spice Garden in Penang provides a particularly flavourful setting for team building, as Destination Asia Malaysia recently discovered during a day of friendly competition involving colleagues from its Penang and Langkawi teams.
The experience began with a guided garden tour exploring tropical herbs, spices and medicinal plants while introducing participants to Malaysia’s rich botanical heritage.
Then came the competitive element. Divided into four groups, participants tackled a quiz before turning their attention to the kitchen. One team prepared chicken sambal, grinding fresh spices with a traditional granite batu giling before frying the chicken and bringing the ingredients together.
Presentation mattered too, with extra points available for decorating the finished dishes. A teh tarik competition provided another test as teams attempted the distinctive “pulled tea” technique responsible for the drink’s frothy top.
Destination Asia’s team ultimately claimed first place, but the experience demonstrated the wider appeal of Tropical Spice Garden for groups: a lively combination of teamwork, friendly rivalry and hands-on engagement with Malaysia’s culinary and cultural traditions.
