Eastern Hokkaido’s spectacular landscapes gain an added cultural dimension this autumn when Akan Ainu Art Week returns to Lake Akan from 8 to 31 October 2026.
The festival transforms the lakeside and surrounding hot spring town into an open-air gallery celebrating the creativity and living traditions of the Ainu, the Indigenous people of northern Japan. Ainu artists and contemporary creators come together for a program of artworks, installations, workshops and cultural performances spread throughout the area.
The setting is integral to the experience. Lake Akan is surrounded by forests and volcanic peaks that blaze with autumn colour in October, while the Ainu worldview has deep connections with the natural world.
