For three days every October, Nagasaki erupts in dragon dances, towering floats and cries of “Motte-koi!” as one of Japan’s oldest and most spectacular festivals returns to the historic port city.
Taking place from 7–9 October, the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival has been celebrated for almost 400 years and remains one of the country’s most distinctive cultural events.
Rooted in Nagasaki’s unique history as Japan’s gateway to international trade, the festival blends Japanese traditions with influences from China and Europe. Elaborate floats inspired by Chinese ships and Dutch vessels, dramatic dragon dances and lively performances by local neighbourhood groups reflect the city’s multicultural heritage. Many participating groups appear only once every seven years, making each festival a unique occasion.
