Destination Asia Malaysia recently welcomed guests from the cruise ship Mein Schiff 6 to Rumah Papan Pandamaran, also known to the local Chinese community as Ban Chu, a lesser-known cultural site near Port Klang.
Rather than heading directly to Kuala Lumpur’s familiar skyline, the visit offered guests a different perspective on the destination. As part of Destination Asia Malaysia’s responsible travel approach, guests were introduced to the Pandamaran Story House, a carefully preserved wooden home that shares the story of Malaysia’s historic New Villages and the communities connected to them.
Through personal stories, simple architecture and quiet surroundings, guests gained a closer understanding of village life and the culture shaped within Pandamaran. The slower pace of the visit also created space for meaningful conversations and a more personal connection with the local area.
By including Pandamaran in the cruise programme, Destination Asia Malaysia is helping to bring visitor attention to places beyond the usual routes. The experience supports more direct engagement with the local community, while contributing to the recognition and continued appreciation of local heritage.
This visit shows how cruise excursions can be designed with greater consideration for people and place. It offered guests the opportunity to discover a lesser-known cultural site while supporting a more thoughtful approach to travel near Port Klang.
