Beyond the temples of Angkor, Siem Reap’s surrounding countryside offers its own rewarding diversions. At Samatoa Lotus Farm, lotus ponds, rice fields and traditional craft come together in an experience rooted in Cambodian culture.
Sacred in Buddhism, the lotus has long been used in medicine, cuisine, cosmetics and textiles. Samatoa is helping revive these traditions while providing employment and skills for women from rural communities.
The experience begins on the water, with guests boarding a small boat to glide between water lilies and flowering lotus. Back at the centre, the team explains the project and demonstrates the intricate process of drawing fine fibres from fresh lotus stems and transforming them into rare textiles.
Guests can then get creative during a private workshop, making three or four simple lotus products such as yarn, seed bracelets, tea or handmade paper.
Interactive, sustainable and suitable for families, the experience provides a gentle counterpoint to Angkor’s monumental sights while offering an insight into local traditions and the versatility of one of Cambodia’s most symbolic plants.
