Explore more of Cambodia’s Angkor temples on foot

KH 305 305

There’s no shortage of ways to explore Angkor, but travelling on foot reveals details that are easily missed from a vehicle. The temples emerge gradually from the landscape: towers glimpsed between trees, carved doorways catching the morning light and ancient walls tangled in roots.

Walking also opens quieter approaches, avoiding some of the busier roads and entrances. There’s time to pause beneath the trees, examine carvings, encounter village life or simply enjoy the stillness of an ancient courtyard.

Destination Asia’s gentle walks typically cover five to ten kilometres and can be adapted around the heat, terrain and interests of each guest. One route links Bat Chum with Ta Prohm, passing rice fields, villages, forest and Sra Srang, the former royal bathing pool. Another follows the walls of Angkor Thom, revealing lesser-known temples, gateways and relics along the way.

By slowing the pace, guests experience Angkor through its sounds, scents and landscapes as well as its monumental architecture, bringing a different perspective to one of Asia’s greatest archaeological sites.
