Celebrate Christmas and New Year in Cambodia

AS 305 305 (2)

Christmas in Cambodia comes with a few unexpected perks. December and January fall in the cooler, dry season, bringing sunny days, lower humidity and ideal conditions for exploring Angkor’s temples on foot or by bicycle.

There’s plenty of scope to combine culture with relaxation. Cambodia’s coast and tropical islands offer white-sand beaches and warm seas, providing an appealing alternative to the region’s better-known holiday destinations. A few days by the water followed by time in Siem Reap makes for a rewarding festive escape.

Although Cambodia is predominantly Buddhist, Christmas and New Year are embraced with enthusiasm, particularly in Siem Reap. Decorations illuminate the streets, children sport Santa outfits, and the occasional tuk-tuk gets a festive makeover. New Year’s Eve celebrations centre on Pub Street, where visitors can join the party or retreat somewhere quieter.

The real attraction, however, is the freedom to enjoy the season at your own pace. Spend mornings exploring ancient temples, afternoons relaxing by the pool and evenings dining outdoors. It’s a different take on Christmas, with a distinctly Cambodian character.
