Since the 13th century, New Year in Cambodia has been set according to the solar calendar and usually falls in mid-April, just after crops have been harvested. This year on the traditional Khmer calendar, it falls on 13-16 April and it’s a time when the whole city of Siem Reap bursts into a wildly colourful celebration, with most of the buildings adorned with displays of stars, flowers and fruit.
There are traditional dance performances, processions, live music, fireworks, feasting and a huge, citywide water fight. But it’s also a time for reverence, reflection and resolving to make a new start, so travellers can witness and take part in the traditional New Year practices of pouring scented water on Buddha statues and paying respect to family elders with a gentle cleansing ritual.
All this takes place, of course, against the backdrop of the world renowned Angkor Wat temples. All in all, the event promises a culturally rich, visually stunning and emotionally uplifting experience, that can foster a deeply felt connection with Cambodia’s traditions and its warm and welcoming people.
